General Rental Information

Important documents

The renter and all authorised drivers must present a driving licence and present it together with an identity card, passport or national identification document when picking up the vehicle.

Copies of documents, digital driving licences (except those issued by Portuguese entities and available on the gov.pt portal), learning driving licences and driving licences with restrictions are not accepted.

Furthermore, the following conditions apply depending on the issuing country of the driving licence:

EU Driving Licences
Driving licences issued by all EU countries are accepted.

All Other Driving Licences
Driving licences printed with non-Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an International driving licence.

For driving licences from countries not part of the international driving licence treaty, an official translation into Portuguese must be presented with the original licence.

Driving licences from non-EU countries (except Switzerland) are accepted if:
a) No visa has been entered in the passport;
b) The customer has a visa in their passport and at the time of rental has not been in Europe for more than 6 months;
c) In cases where the customer has been in Europe for more than 6 months, they must present a driving licence from an EU country.

Age restrictions

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's licence, which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle:

Tariff Information

General

Credit and Debit cards

All credit cards must be in the name of the main driver. The following credit and debit cards are accepted: internationally recognised credit card companies (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB), Airplus and Amex BTA/iBTA are accepted as payment methods. V-Pay, prepaid cards, or debit cards (Visa Electron) are not accepted. The payment method must have been issued in the name of the lessee. This must be presented at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid at least one month at this time. The amount that will be debited includes the rental price as well as all additional extras and charges.

Sixt CarExpress Servicecard (Advantage Circle) is only accepted in combination with a valid credit or debit card.

Please note, that payments and approvals with debit/credit cards will require a PIN to be entered.

Vouchers

The use of a voucher depends on presenting the original at the counter and confirming its validity.

Along with the voucher, Sixt Portugal shall ask the Client to present a credit or debit card for any additional charges, under the terms set out above.

Security Deposit

As security, the means of payment is debited with a deposit amount. The amount of the deposit depends on the vehicle group of the rented vehicle and according to the following table:

Special rental information when booking Prepaid rates

Prepaid tariff - Pay now

When booking a prepaid tariff, the payment method will be immediately debited with the expected rental price incl. booked extras and fees (gross).

The renter must be the holder of the payment card used, with the driver and card details registered in the booking, after which they cannot be changed.

The credit card used must be valid for a minimum period of 1 month after the scheduled end date of the end of the rental and must be presented at the time of collection. All extra costs that occur during the car rental will be charged to this credit card.
No refund shall be issued for non-collection of the vehicle, late collection, or early return.

Changing booking

A prepaid booking can be changed up to 48 hours before the start of the rental hired upon confirmation by Sixt Portugal and payment of a change supplement of 25.00 EUR. There shall be no refund, nor any differential value, if the change made leads to a reduction in the total cost of the booking. Any changes made to a prepaid reservation may impact the rental rate. The renter cannot change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate.

Cancellation

A booking can be cancelled before the rental begins. In the event of cancellation, the advance payment shall be refunded, subject to a cancellation fee, which shall be retained for the maximum value of 3 rental days (including all extras and charges). Cancellations can be made online, by telephone (+351 255 788 199) or e-Mail: ([email protected]).

No-show

If the booked vehicle is not picked up or the pick-up takes place beyond the time agreed upon in the reservation, the rental amount already paid will be retained in full by Sixt Portugal.

Protection conditions

Third Party Insurance (TI)

The Third-Party Insurance for the rented vehicle guarantees, under its policy, a maximum compensation limit of 50 million Euros for personal and material damages.

Exclusions from mandatory civil liability insurance are, among others:

- Damage caused to the insured vehicle itself;
- Damage caused to goods transported in the insured vehicle, whether during transport or during loading and unloading operations;
- Any damage caused to third parties as a result of loading and unloading operations.

Loss damage waiver (incl. Theft Protection) (LDW)

LDW covers all damage caused to the vehicle in the event of a road accident (crash, collision, rollover), as well as theft and robbery of the vehicle, the renter being subject to payment of a deductible, in accordance with the table in force mentioned below.

If no loss damage waiver has been arranged, the lessee is responsible for all damage to the rental vehicle not proven to be caused by a third party, and shall be liable for up to the full value of the vehicle plus further recoverable damages (e.g. reduction in value, expert assessor fees, etc.).

When there is no proof that the damage was caused by third parties, the renter is liable up to the following limits:

This protection does not cover damage to the underbody, passenger compartment, tyres, windows and mechanical components.

Loss damage waiver (including Theft Protection) with reduced excess - Top Cover LDW (BE)

If LDW is already included in the rates, the renter can choose Loss damage waiver (including Theft Protection) with reduced excess to reduce the Non-Waiverable Responsibility.

Damage to the underbody, passenger compartment, tyres, windows and mechanical components is excluded from the scope of this coverage.

If loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection) with reduced excess is accepted, customer is only responsible for the following amounts:

Tyre and Glass Coverage (TG)

TG covers damage to glass (except lights) and tyres (except rims) with a deductible of EUR 0.00.

If protection is not accepted, the customer will be held liable for all damages.

Tyre and windscreen coverage is not offered on the XTAM car group.

Personal Accident Protection (I)

Covers health expenses, the maximum amounts of which are 1,500.00 EUR in the case of illness or hospitalisation caused by a road accident during the term of this rental agreement and 15,000.00 EUR in the event of death or disability.

Interior Protection (BQ)

Covers all damage to the interior of the vehicle, including the cargo area.

If there is a breach of the general rental terms and conditions, all protections mentioned above shall be considered null and void, for example, whenever the vehicle is not driven by an authorised driver or whenever the driver of the vehicle does not have a valid driving license at the time of the event that gave rise to the claim for compensation.

Roadside Assistance

The client benefits, during the rental period and at no additional cost from a 24-hour Roadside assistance service, which acts in the event of vehicle breakdown and/or accident. Assistance includes, as required, the following services: a) towing or removal of the vehicle; b) transportation of the renter and vehicle occupants to the SIXT station or location to be designated; c) replacement vehicle; d) hotel room for one night, with breakfast, up to a maximum amount of 65.00 EUR per rental. In the event of a breakdown or accident, the client must contact travel assistance, using the contact details provided in the Specific Conditions that can be found in the vehicle rental agreement.

Roadside Protection (BC)

An extension of the Roadside Assistance conditions, listed in paragraphs a), b), c) and d) above mentioned, to situations arising from the renter's negligence that are excluded from the scope of accidents and breakdowns. This service covers costs resulting from:

a) forgotten or lost key; b) immobilisation due to lack of fuel or battery; c) fuel change; d) towing and taxi in case of tire burst or puncture.

Cross border rentals and territorial restrictions

Departure from the country is subject to prior confirmation and authorisation and only for the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland.

Cross Border Rentals between the mainland, Madeira Island and Azores are not permitted.

The following car groups are not permitted to cross borders: Extraordinary cars X*** and Luxury cars L***. Therefore, a permit cannot be issued to customers renting these vehicles.

In the event of an offence against Cross Border & Territorial Restrictions all protections lose their validity. Please contact the rental office.

Charges when traveling abroad

For permitted journeys abroad in accordance with the above-mentioned entry restrictions, Sixt will charge the contractually agreed travel abroad fee as part of the booking process (selectable under "Extras"). This fee applies independent of the return location and, in the case of a one-way rental, in addition to the one-way fee.

Unauthorised travel abroad

For unauthorised use abroad, a contractual penalty of 150.00 EUR will be payable.

Extras

Sixt offers the possibility of hiring several additional services, subject to availability.

Sixt Speedway

Skip waiting and avoid queues, SIXT Speedway offers you the possibility of a contactless vehicle collection and return at selected SIXT stations. Please note that the service is subject to a fee.

One-way rentals

One-way rentals between Sixt locations in Portugal (mainland) are allowed under certain conditions depending on rate.

One-way rentals between the Madeira Island and the mainland or the Azores are not allowed.

All international One-Way Rentals are subject to confirmation.

Navigation system

Navigation systems are available subject to a fee.

Personal Travel Assistant - Sixt Connect

A mobile device shall be provided that can be used to access the internet and make phone calls around the world. Subject to availability and in selected stations. Sixt Connect is available for a supplement.

Prepaid Sixt Connect eSIM card is available subject to a fee. To use an eSIM, your device must be eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.

Additional Driver

Drivers can be added to the rental agreement at an additional cost. Additional drivers shall be subject to the same identification documentation and driving licence restrictions as the main driver, set out in the "General rental information" field.

Baby and child seats

We provide child and baby car seats in compliance with the highest safety standards. Installation is the responsibility of the customer.

Vehicle refuelling

If the vehicle has not been returned in a completely refuelled state, and if you have not booked "Prepaid fuel" or "Fuelling service" extras, Sixt will charge you the fees in accordance with the tariffs applicable upon rental, for the fuelling of the vehicle and for fuel. The respectively valid tariffs are available at the Sixt branches.

Prepaid fuel:
You can purchase the "Prepaid fuel" extra at the comparable fuel station price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will not be charged any additional refuelling costs in accordance with the above paragraph. Please note that unused fuel will not be reimbursed.

Fuelling service:
Subject to availability at the respective branch, you can book our "Fuelling service" at the specified price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will only be charged for the subsequently fuelled litres of fuel at comparable fuel station prices, in addition to the above-mentioned fee.

Electric vehicle charging

Electric Vehicles must be returned at least 80% charged. In case the vehicle is not charged sufficiently, additional costs will apply per kWh of missing battery capacity.

Delivery and collection

Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.

E-Toll (mandatory membership of Via Verde)

Entering into the rental agreement implies automatic subscription, by the renter, of a toll management service, provided by SIXT PORTUGAL, for which the amount determined by law shall be charged (daily value of 2.23 EUR, maximum per rental of 22.30 EUR for every 30 days). This service allows, using an identifier (installed in the vehicle) owned by SIXT PORTUGAL, to determine the value of toll fees recorded during the validity of the agreement with a view to their collection. Whenever there is no effective use of toll lanes, the amount charged shall be credited to the Client within 30 days of the end of the rental agreement. If toll lanes are used during the term of the agreement, the renter expressly authorises SIXT PORTUGAL to debit their value within 30 days of its term, committing, for that purpose, to guarantee that the credit card allows international transactions up to said date.

Other Fees and Taxes

Premium Location Fee

A premium location fee is charged for rentals starting at airports and train stations.

Out Of Hours

Pick-ups and returns out of opening hours are possible at selected stations. In this case, an additional charge applies for the provision of the service.

Local rental surcharge

All rentals are subject to a local rental surcharge.

Fine Handling Fee

The renter is responsible for payment of all traffic/parking fines that occur during the rental.

If the renter has a traffic/parking fine during the rental where SIXT is required to identify the driver, an administrative Fee of 60.00 EUR shall be charged. Additionally, the renter will be contacted by the competent authority to pay the fine.

Vehicle Cleaning

If the condition of the vehicle upon return requires special cleaning procedures (i.e. removing odors, dirt resulting from transporting pets, spills of liquids etc.) an additional fee shall apply.

Flexi Return Guarantee

Plans may change. As a flexible mobility partner, we are available to our clients to adapt their plans. Our Flexi Return Guarantee allows our clients to have the freedom to return the vehicle at any time, at any authorized Sixt station, regardless of what is stipulated in their rental agreement.

If there is a change of plans during the agreement period, we ask you to notify us by phone at +351 255 788 199, by e-mail ([email protected]) or go to any of our several rental stations, so that our employees can change the rental agreement according to your needs. Sixt adapts to your plans.

Flexi Early Return for both types of rates (Prepay Now/Pay Later)

When booking, with a pre-pay now, or pay at the counter rate no refund shall apply in case of early return. The renter must inform the lessor in advance, otherwise a fee corresponding to 50% of the value of unused days shall apply. For more information, see the Pay Now Rate section.

Flexi Late Return service for both types of rates (Prepay Now/Pay Later)

If you return the vehicle later, without notifying us, we will bill you 12.30 EUR service fee for the Flexi Return Service. This fee applies in addition to any extra days which might incur due to the rental extension.

Flexi Return Location for both types of rates (Prepay Now/Pay Later)

If the renter returns the vehicle at a rental station other than that initially agreed within a perimeter of 50 km, without prior notice up to 12 hours before returning the vehicle, a fee of 19.68 EUR shall apply. If the return takes place at a station located at an airport, a surcharge of 16% of the total rental price will also be added.
